How to turn data nodes into insights and strategies with the Universal Tool

The Universal Tool lets you perform custom AI tasks on any data already on your DFIRST whiteboard.

Updated over 3 months ago

The Universal Tool is a powerful and flexible feature inside your whiteboard that allows you to take any existing data on your whiteboard—like a scraped website or social media profile—and perform complex actions using simple, natural language commands.

It acts as a smart, general-purpose node that uses your existing content as context for a new action.

This guide will walk you through a common example: analyzing the user sentiment of an Instagram profile. By the end, you'll know how to connect an existing data source to the Universal Tool to generate new insights instantly.

Step 1: Start with Your Data Node

Begin with a data source already on your whiteboard. This could be anything from a competitor's website to customer feedback.

In this example, we are using a node that contains scraped data from an Instagram profile, including posts and user comments.

You can add a scraper by just pasting (CTRL+V) any URL directly onto the whiteboard.

Step 2: Create a Universal Tool Node

To connect your data to a new task, click and hold the connection point on the side of your data node. Drag your cursor onto an empty area of the whiteboard and release it.

This action will automatically create a new Universal Tool node, linked to your original data.

Step 3: Write Your Command

Now, tell the AI what you want it to do. In the input field of the Universal Tool node, type a clear and specific command. The AI will use the content from your linked data node to perform this task.

For this example, we will ask it to:

Analyze Instagram user sentiment and suggest ways to handle any negative feedback.

Step 4: Generate the Analysis

Once you're happy with your command, click the Generate button. The AI will begin processing your request. It will first show you its plan of action and then proceed to generate the full analysis.

Step 5: Review Your Results

The AI will create a new, detailed node containing the results of your command. You can scroll through this node to see a complete breakdown, which may include sentiment distribution, key metrics, a summary of common themes, and actionable suggestions. You now have a rich analysis linked directly to your source data.

💡 Pro-Tip

The more specific your command, the better your results will be. Instead of a general request like "summarize this," try a more detailed command like, "Summarize this article into five key bullet points and create a list of all mentioned company names."

Remember:

The Universal Tool is not limited to a single action. You can chain multiple Universal Tool nodes together to create sophisticated workflows. For example, after generating the sentiment analysis, you could drag a new connection line from the analysis node and enter a new command like, *"Draft three polite responses to the 'Product Quality' comments."* Experiment with different commands to see what you can automate!
